Douglas Laube, MD, MEd, Elected Board Chair of Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health

08/24/2010

New York, NY—Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health has elected Douglas Laube, MD, MEd, to serve as board chair for the next three years. An obstetrician/gynecologist currently practicing in Wisconsin, Dr. Laube provides the full range of reproductive health care to women. He has counseled young women about birth control, delivered babies, performed abortions, and run a menopause clinic.

In addition to providing direct services, Dr. Laube is a longtime teacher and advocate for medical education. He served as president of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists from 2006-2007. Beginning in August 2010, Dr. Laube will serve a one-year term as a Jefferson Science Fellow, based in Washington, DC.

“I am thrilled to take the helm of Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health at a time when the delivery of health care in America is undergoing profound changes,” said Dr. Laube. “In the past year, abortion services have been under attack in Congress and statehouses around the nation. Pro-choice physicians and our supporters must seize the moment and fight for coverage of all aspects of reproductive health care, from contraception to abortion.”

Dr. Laube replaces Suzanne Poppema, MD, who served as board chair of PRCH from June 2007 to June 2010.

“My years as board chair have seen extreme highs and lows for reproductive health,” notes Dr. Poppema. “We lost one of our greatest advocates for abortion rights when George Tiller, MD, was murdered, but we also gained a pro-choice president who has rolled back some of the most damaging policies of the previous administration. Dr. Laube’s experience in advocacy and medical education will help pro-choice physicians continue our fight to protect reproductive health.”

In addition to Dr. Laube, five physicians and one medical student have joined PRCH’s board of directors. They include Anna Altshuler, MD, MPH, an ob/gyn resident at the University of Washington Medical Center; Darcy Broughton, a fourth year medical student at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University; Fredrik Broekhuizen, MD, an ob/gyn at the Medical College of Wisconsin; Stephanie Kusko Cramer, MD, an ophthalmology resident at Providence Portland Hospital in Oregon; Michelle Forcier, MD, MPH, an adolescent medicine specialist at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Rhode Island; and Patricia Glowa, MD, a family physician at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire.
