Dr. Stanwood Counters “Unnecessary Abortion” Claim
October 4, 2012
Board chair-elect Nancy Stanwood, MD, MPH, spoke to the Huffington Post and the Guardian about Representative Todd Akin's claim that physicians who provide abortions routinely perform unnecessary procedures. She told the Huffington Post that his accusations "are baseless and medically ridiculous … [Abortion providers are] thoughtful and passionate, and we've worked really hard to get the medical training we need to take care of patients. That’s our motivation."
Dr. Stanwood echoed that theme in her interview with the Guardian, noting that Akin's charges have "no place in the 21st century."
