Council Member Jessica S. Lappin City of New York PROCLAMATION WHEREAS: Jessica S. Lappin, Council Member of the 5th District, is proud to honor Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health, on the occasion of its 2012 William K. Rashbaum, MD, and George Tiller, MD, Abortion Provider Awards, for 20 years of pioneering work in reproductive health research, care and medicine; and WHEREAS: Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health was founded in 1992 by the late William K. Rahsbaum, MD (1926-2005), and other New York City doctors concerned about increasing harassment and violence against abortion providers and their patients in the United States; and WHEREAS: Dr. Rashbaum and his colleagues understood that abortion care is vital to the health and well-being of women and their families, having treated women in the time before Roe v. Wade and seen the injury and death caused by botched illegal abortions; and WHEREAS: Over the course of the last two decades, Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health has challenged the stigma and misinformation surrounding abortion, advocating for medically appropriate policies and laws that affirm abortion as a legal, necessary part of comprehensive women's health care; and WHEREAS: Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health has played an instrumental role in its service to the medical community and to the community at large and we wish it continued success in the years ahead; now, therefore BE IT KNOWN: That Jessica S. Lappin, Council Member of the 5th District, gratefully honors Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health for celebrating physicians who continue to provide essential services to women.
