Lift the Age Limit on Plan B

November 30, 2012

In the Los Angeles Times, Leadership Training Academy Fellow Caron Kim, MD, MSc, praises the new recommendation that physicians give teens advance prescriptions for emergency contraception -- a policy recently advanced by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

But Dr. Kim notes that this can only be a stop-gap measure as we push for the elimination of the age restriction on Plan B:

"This medically baseless rule forces the contraceptive behind the pharmacy counter, whose limited schedule can hinder teens with prescriptions and adults who can buy the medication without a prescription. Let's move emergency contraception to the open shelves, making it more accessible to everyone who needs it."
