Racism as Ammunition in the War on Women
July 20, 2012
In an editorial in the July Contraception, PRCH board member Willie Parker, MD, MPH, MSc, and Leadership Training Academy faculty member Carole Joffe, PhD, express their outrage over the recent legislative attacks on reproductive health care and "the cynical manipulation of racial themes by the opponents of abortion and birth control." They point to such examples as recent anti-abortion billboards targeting African-Americans and distortions of Margaret Sanger's views on race aimed at discrediting Planned Parenthood.
Joffe and Dr. Parker conclude: "[T]he stakes in this 'war [on women]' are inevitably the highest for the most vulnerable in our society ... poor women of color."
Blogs for Our Bodies, Ourselves and the Institute for Women's Health Research at Northwestern posted commentary about the editorial.
