Women's Privacy Under Attack in Kansas
02/25/2005

Statement of Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health Chair of the Board of Directors, Wendy Chavkin, MD, MPH

New York, NY—The attempt of Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline to obtain scores of medical records of women and girls represents an unprecedented attack on the right to privacy and confidentiality. For an officer of the state to embark on such a broad and unfounded fishing expedition intrudes upon medical privacy and distorts the doctor-patient relationship of trust.

As physicians, we provide our patients with the best scientifically based healthcare possible, uphold the principles of informed consent, and guarantee our patients medical privacy. Attempts by the government to infringe upon these principles for political and ideological gain will harm the public's health.
